Understanding GPA Calculation and Quality Points
Quality Points System
Quality points are assigned to each letter grade to quantify academic performance. The total quality points for a course are calculated by multiplying the credit hours of the course by the quality points assigned to the grade earned.
| Letter Grade | Description | Quality Points |
|---|---|---|
| A+ | Exceptional | 4.00 |
| A | Excellent | 3.75 |
| B+ | Superior | 3.50 |
| B | Very Good | 3.00 |
| C+ | Above Average | 2.50 |
| C | Good | 2.00 |
| D+ | High Pass | 1.50 |
| D | Pass | 1.00 |
| F | Fail | 0.00 |
GPA Calculation
Formula
GPA = (Total Quality Points) / (Total Credit Hours Attempted)
Example Calculation
A student takes 3 courses in a semester:
- Course 1 (3 credits): Grade A (3.75 pts) → 3 × 3.75 = 11.25 points
- Course 2 (4 credits): Grade B (3.00 pts) → 4 × 3.00 = 12.00 points
- Course 3 (3 credits): Grade C+ (2.50 pts) → 3 × 2.50 = 7.50 points
Total Credits = 3 + 4 + 3 = 10
Total Quality Points = 11.25 + 12.00 + 7.50 = 30.75
GPA = 30.75 / 10 = 3.075
